ABOUT

Somatic Counsel is the unity of Lee Price's experience as a therapy practitioner, trauma-informed attorney, and memoir writer. Her approach to personal development helps clients identify and feel their emotions, analyze their behavioral patterns, and make meaning of their lives through language. Somatics refers to the experience of emotions within the unified container of mind and body. Counsel means expert guidance given after deep and careful listening. By offering counsel in somatic work, Lee brings clients into self-understanding and repair through insight and deepened emotional capacity.

Somatic Counsel is grounded in Core Energetics, an approach to psychotherapy that examines how our lived experiences are stored as emotions in our bodies. The body aspect is a critical component to true self-understanding, because so much of what we experience is held there. Sessions involve the insight and discussion associated with traditional psychotherapy, but also include creative interventions where clients use movement, breath, and sound to exaggerate, release, and integrate their feelings. This means emotions aren't just talked about - they're invited into the session as valuable felt-experiences. Sometimes this involves big expressions, like screaming rage into a pillow. Other times it's a more subtle exercise, like retracting the chest in fear. This somatic framework teaches clients to tolerate the discomfort of difficult emotions, so they can move out of painful patterns and into more intimate, fulfilling relationship with themselves and others.

The relationship between client and practitioner is also foundational to Somatic Counsel. To be seen and understood by another person is powerfully transformative. But personal disclosure requires great vulnerability. Lee is intensely present in her work with clients, offering warmth, attunement, and reflection so as to earn and grow trust within the container. She invokes the role of counsel as a sacred one - that of confidante, advisor, and witness to the truth of her client's experiences.

The guiding principle behind Somatic Counsel is the concept of personal justice. Personal justice is a long-term reparative process of acknowledging what's harmed us so that we can become empowered to change and not recreate it. It requires taking inventory of our life to reckon with how we've internalized formative events. It’s about reclaiming power, moving out of victimhood, and into a place of integration through a more authentic self. Through this intimate exploration of our histories and present lives, we discover the complexity of life and find reconciliation and repair.
